MONTEREY, CA – Bruce, 87, passed away at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP), on April 27, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Pacific Grove, CA on October 27, 1926, to Edward C. and Lucille R. Petersen. He attended Walter Colton School, graduated from Monterey High School in 1945, and attended Salinas Junior College (Hartnell). He was then called to service by the U.S. Army in 1951, serving at Fort Ord and Hawaii.
Bruce married the love of his life, Teresa Longueira on April 15, 1956, and enjoyed 58 years of love and happiness. Bruce and Teresa in their retirement took yearly trips to Lake Tahoe since 1980. They traveled to Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Germany, and England, and enjoyed many bus trips throughout the United States.
In his younger years he worked alongside his father, mother and brother at the Monterey Garage from 1942-1985. Bruce's family started the Monterey Garage in 1915, as a Ford Dealership selling Model Ts and Model T buses that eventually led them to co-found the Monterey Bay Rapid Transit Bus Company. Monterey Garage was a full service gas station, towing service, and automotive repair business with the AAA contract beginning in 1920 and was the oldest AAA contract in Northern California. Bruce and his brother, Darrell, became partners with their parents in the garage in 1959 and later sold the garage in 1984 after 69 years of family ownership.
Bruce volunteered for the AT&T Golf Tournament and belonged to Monterey History and Arts Association. He enjoyed delivering Meals On Wheels with his brother, Darrell, for the last seven years. He was a life member of Monterey BPOE
(Benevolent Protection Order of Elks) and a member of the American Legion.
Bruce was always active and most recently enjoyed swimming three days a week at Patulo Swimming Pool, walking daily, and working Sudoku puzzles.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Teresa; his son, Mark (Jane); daughter, Sandra Bruno; grandsons, Bart Nicholas and Peter Bruno; brother, Darrell (Hanna); and sister-in-law, Elena Young; sister-in-law, Marion Petersen; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward C. and Lucille R.; brother, Leland and sister-in-law, Greta. The family suggests any memorial contributions be made to Meals On Wheels or the Tyler Heart Institute of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. The family would like to thank Dr. Richard King, MD – Bruce's longtime internal medicine physician; Dr. Michael Plainse, MD; the surgeons and the entire staff at CHOMP with special recognition of the Intensive Care Unit.
