CARMEL VALLEY – Catherine Ernandes Cardinale, 84 unexpectedly passed away on May 23, 2013 at her Carmel Valley home. She was born in Monterey and the only child of Speranza Ventimiglia Ernandes and Guiseppe "Peppi" Ernandes. Mrs. Cardinale was a lifelong resident of the Monterey Peninsula. Her father introduced her to Joe Cardinale (deceased in 2005) which led to their marriage in 1944. They were married for 61 wonderful years. She stated on numerous occasions that she had been truly blessed with great parents, a wonderful husband and loving children. Her greatest joy was cooking, baking and hosting dinners for family, friends and neighbors at her Carmel Valley home. Her compassion complimented her generosity.
Catherine had an impeccable memory for people, dates and events. She was definitely the family historian, as well as, the historian for the Italian fishing community of the Monterey Peninsula. Catherine participated in documentaries, panel discussions and books chronicling a woman's perspective of the Cannery Row fishing industry. She also was an acutely keen businesswoman who wrote many of her own contracts and leases. She loved Monterey and was so very proud to be a member of this beautiful peninsula.
Mrs. Cardinale is survived by her beloved daughter and sons: Marie Jo (Horace), Sal (Gretchen), Peppi (Sheryle),Frank (Susan), 12 cherished grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, loving brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jack and Gilda Cardinale. The family would especially like to acknowledge some truly incredible loving people who cared for Mrs. Cardinale in a special way: LeiLei Bates, Maggie and Cody Sherar, Maria Favalora and the loving comares and compares.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at San Carlos Cathedral. Entombment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of the Central Coast, P. O. Box 2750, Monterey, CA. 93942-2750 in loving memory of Catherine Cardinale.
