MONTEREY - Catherine Nuovo Ferrante Ascone, passed away after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her
She was born in Monterey, California on March 14, 1926 to Antonio and Rose Melicia Nuovo. Her heritage in Monterey goes back to 1801 with the arrival of Joaquine Del La Torre, a cadet with the Spanish military assigned to Monterey. She spent her entire life in Monterey among her family and friends. As a teenager she worked on Cannery Row canning sardines, later worked for Woolworth, owner of Becky Burger Pit in New Monterey, later she managed the Royal Danish Bakery in Carmel for many years. Catherine enjoyed her family, trips to Europe, however, she always said, "There is no place more beautiful than the Monterey Peninsula." Her favorite day of the week was Monday, she would get together with her girlfriends to play cards with a maximum bid of 10 cents, you could go to her house knowing she had a box of See's candy half eaten and willing to share with friends. Her appearance was always impeccable ready to walk any runway. She was a member of the Italian Catholic Federation and the San Carlos Catherdal Parish.
Catherine was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph H. Ferrante; her second husband, Joseph Ascone; and her brother, John Nuovo. She is survived by her son, Frank Ferrante (Barbara); daughters: Antonia Ferrante Ihnot (Michael), and Kathleen Ferrante Mortensen (John); grandchildren: Joann, AnnaMarie, Christina, Michael, Alycia, Kaitlyn; great grandchildren: Alyssa, Christopher, Kirsten, Kylie; her brother, Frank Nuovo (Cesca); sister, Dolores Rappa (Horace) and many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Drs. Craig Christensen; Jerry Rubin and Michael Galloway; the Community Hospital nurses in Short Stay and the Infusion Center; caregivers Flora and Myra, for always showing their love, kindness and compassionate care during their Mother's lengthy illness.
Visitation will be on Friday, February 3, 2012, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Mission Mortuary in Monterey followed by Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012 at San Carlos Cathedral.
