Gerald J. "Jerry" Mahalko

SALINAS - Gerald J. "Jerry" Mahalko, 77, a 38-year resident, passed away from health complications Thursday, October 25, 2012. Born July 7, 1935 in Chicago, IL, he attended the University of Wisconsin
at Madison and entered the Army
as a second Lieutenant in 1957. He served in Berlin, Germany when the Wall was built on August 13, 1961, served two tours during the Vietnam War
and attended Ranger and Airborne Training. He left the Army as a Major and received the Bronze Star
with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Expert Infantryman's Badge. He was also a lifetime member of the 25th Division Association.
He left the Army at Fort Ord in 1972 and became a resident of Salinas. He joined the New York Life office in Salinas as an agent and later became a manager until his retirement in 2000 from the San Jose office.
He was an avid left-handed golfer who was a former member of Corral de Tierra Country Club, Senior Men's Golf Association at Corral de Tierra Country Club, National Association of Left-Handed Golfers, and the Northern California Left-Handed Golfers Association.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Mahalko in June 2012.
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Sandi Johnson; stepson, Bob Sampson; granddaughter, Sandra Sampson; grandson, Robert Sampson; and great-granddaughters, Berkly and Kensington.
