1913 ~ 2011
Monterey - Josephine Arancio, age 98, an elegant lady, peacefully passed away at her home in the presence of her three loving children.
She was born in Marettimo, Sicily on May 22, 1913. At the age of 12 her father, Joseph Aliotti, a pioneer Monterey fisherman, sent for her passage along with her mother, Rosa and brother, John.
At age 20 she married Sal Arancio, also from Marettimo. Together they built the purse seine fishing boat, the Vivian A. They started their family and have lived on Larkin Street throughout life.
She was involved with many Italian Catholic organizations. Josephine's home was filled with the aroma of Italian cooking, Italian opera, and Sicilian language. She was very proud of her Sicilian heritage yet was a patriotic American.
She is survived by her son, Jack Arancio; her son, Joseph Arancio; daughter, Vivian Barone; and grandchildren, Alicia and Daniela Barone, and David and Joe Arancio.
The family would like to express gratitude to our devoted caregiver, Maria Martinez and for the compassion of Heartland Hospice.
Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 9:30am at San Carlos Cathedral.
Arrangements are by Mission Mortuary, Monterey, CA.
