Gary Dean Hornbuckle, 77, of Ketchum, Idaho, died suddenly of heart failure, Wednesday, March 1st, 2017 in Ketchum.
Gary Dean Hornbuckle was born March 22nd, 1939 in Ottawa, Kansas. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1967. He was a recognized pioneer in the computer industry, sought after by RAND Corporation and M.I.T. prior to forming his own companies; Applicon, Inc., IMPRES, Inc. and Hornbuckle Engineering, Inc.
Gary and his wife Sandra Schmidt Hubred Hornbuckle who predeceased him lived in Pebble Beach for 28 years, enjoying all that this beautiful area and their many friends offered them. Gary was an avid golfer and he and Sandra were active members of The Monterey Peninsula Country Club where Gary served as President in 2004. They both were also members of The Beach and Tennis Club at Pebble Beach and The Stillwater Yacht Club where Gary was Treasurer for several years and Commodore in 2005. Gary's design and carpentry skills were responsible for the little boathouse now standing at the end of the pier at Stillwater Cove.
Gary served on numerous boards, including Del Monte Forest Property Owners where he was Treasurer and Pebble Beach Community Services District where he was Board President for two terms. He was also president of SIR and its first treasurer when it became Stillwater Club, an organization that credits Gary's involvement to its thriving membership today.
In 2014, Gary married Barbi Reed and moved to Ketchum, Idaho. There he developed a love for mountains, hiking and cross-country skiing with Barbi and cherished their cabin in the Sawtooth National Forest. He continued to follow his lifelong passion for woodworking and was respected as a true master of his craft.
Gary is survived by his wife Barbi Reed; son Sterling Hornbuckle (Susan) of Dripping Springs, Texas and daughter Stephanie Hornbuckle Thompson of Shawnee, Kansas; stepson Kent Hubred (Pearl) of Granite Bay, California and stepdaughter Jill Hubred Lintukorpi (Harri) of Boulder, Colorado; stepson Reed Lindsay and stepdaughter Tate Reed both of Ketchum, Idaho; nine grandchildren and step-grandchildren (Sterling Hornbuckle II, Carson, McKinley and Will Hubred, Hanna and Elke Lintukorpi, Alexandra Hornbuckle, Sydney Sands, Christian Thompson); brother Carl Hornbuckle (Merry Dee) of Ottawa, Kansas; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Gary's parents, James Maxwell Hornbuckle and Ruby Oneita Hoover Hornbuckle, his infant sister Beverly Ann and his second wife Sandra Schmidt Hubred Hornbuckle, preceded Gary in death.

Hornbuckle Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established in Gary's memory to annually benefit a deserving high school senior committed to a career in engineering or computer science. A celebration of Gary's rewarding and full life will be held in Idaho this summer. Date and time will be announced later.
