Donald Campbell Obituary

Donald E. Campbell, Jr.
November 12, 1950 ~ June 26, 2010

CARMEL - With shock and sadness, lifelong Carmel resident, Donald "Dec" Campbell, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, June 26, 2010 at the Community Hospital of The Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP). He was 59 years old.
Born in Twin Falls, Idaho, Dec attended Carmel schools, graduating with the class of 1969 from Carmel High School. He attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, the Monterey Institute of International Studies and graduated from the University of Nevada with Bachelor of Science degrees and a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Dec was previously employed as a Claims Adjuster and Purchasing Manager for a lumber company.
A brilliant man, this gentle giant had many interests. An avid reader, writer, philatelist and collector, Dec had a wonderful sense of humor and prior to his
leg injury was a scratch golfer often playing with just three irons and a putter.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eunice Campbell and his brother-in-law, John Leslie Smitherman, USN. He is survived by his father, Donald E. Campbell, Sr. of Carmel; his sister, Ann Cowles and her husband, Jack of Pebble Beach, their children and families.
Words cannot express our gratitude for the amazing care, compassion and kindness given by Dr. Lane W. Verlenden, the entire staff of Terrace East at
CHOMP, Ceil and Yvonne Jacobs, members of the Carmel Police and Fire Departments, Josh Plosser, Lisa Panetta and so many others who touched his
life.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at The Church In The Forest in Pebble Beach. Arrangements are by the Paul Mortuary.

Today I learned that Dec had died. I wish Mr. Campbell, Ann and her family my warmest thoughts and prayers.
There are so many wonderful memories of basketball, football, the neighborhood and just sitting in the grass talking in Falge's yard.
I must share a wonderful memory...Before we moved away from Carmel, Dec and I went out to a new Japanese restaurant in Carmel. We arrived and had to remove our shoes and place them in a cubby. Dec shoes had to be placed on the floor. We were then escorted to our table and were to sit on the floor. Dec could not get to the floor and fit his legs under the table. The waiters then brought in a card table so that we could enjoy a most memorable meal...Good time and good laughs!!
God bless you big guy! Blessings and love to the Campbell family! Patty

I knew Dec as a neighbor and as an upper classman in high school. Always patient, bright, balanced, friendly, witty, and most notably he had a truly great sense of humor.

All of these great characteristics helped him allot when he decided to tutor me for my high school Latin class. He had the patience of a saint, and he had a natural teaching ability, as evidenced by me actually getting Latin, or at least enough to pass comfortably.

While I am very surprised and saddened to hear of his passing, I can tell you that he I only have pleasant recollections of our experiences in high school, and as neighbors.

My condolences to Mr. Campbell, Anne, and extended family.

I will always remember Dec fondly. One memory that sticks is Dec playing basketball with us, the boys in the neighborhood, at the Falge's-- We were 10 years younger and Dec positively towered over us-- yet kept the game fun for all.
Our Love to all of his family
