Elmer Staude Obituary

August 23, 1910 ~ November 5, 2006

BIG SUR – Tony Staude, 96, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2006. Tony was a resident of Big Sur since 1982. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas on August 23, 1910.  He attended Texas Christian University where he was awarded B.A. and M.A. degrees with a major in economics. He continued graduate studies in economics at the University of Texas.
In 1935, Tony moved to Los Angeles, California, where he met his wife, Marguerite Brunswig, who passed away in 1988 after 50 years of marriage. He started working for the Brunswig Drug Company in 1939 and quickly rose through the organization to reach President. Brunswig Drug merged and became Bergen Brunswig Corporation where he took on the company leadership as Chairman of the Board until his retirement in 1971. Tony served on other boards including one of the largest private label vitamin companies in the United States, P. Leiner.
In 1956, he and his wife, Marguerite, completed one of their major life projects from conception to completion of the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, Arizona. Earlier this year Tony took part with the community, friends and family in a 50th anniversary Mass. Tony wishes to be remembered as assisting his wife in bringing to reality the Chapel, where today thousands are inspired every year by its spiritual and artistic message.
Tony was passionate toward friendships and contributing to the local community. He was a member of the California Club in Los Angeles for over 40 years and the Pacheco Club in Monterey. Tony touched numerous people throughout his life as he inspired others through his values of honesty, sincerity, and integrity. He tirelessly contributed to others, to help them achieve their own possibilities of greatness.
He is survived by his son, John R. Staude; three grandsons; and four great grandchildren. He suggested that in lieu of flowers, contributions to the Chapel of the Holy Cross, 780 Chapel Rd., Sedona, AZ 86336.
Arrangements are by The Paul Mortuary.

Sure miss going to the California club with Tony then on to an Opera, where he was an original founder of the Dorothy Chandler pavilion. He was a gentleman non plus ultra.

Tony was a friend, mentor and a prince of a man. He was a man of great integrity, intelligent and truly a compassionate person and a true friend who always inspired me to look at life challenges is such a positive way.

I will miss Tony profoundly, however I will always reflect on our many times we spent together over the years enjoying each other company.

God bless you, and all the people you touched in your lifetime
