Cmmdr. Clarence L. "Spud" Lambing, USN (Ret) Obituary
Pacific Grove, CA – Commander Lambing passed away July 13, 2014 at the age of 92.
Spud was born in Twin Rocks, PA. He joined the Navy during World War II, and had a career of 30 years, with over 5,000 flight hours, retiring at the rank of Commander. He was a Naval Aviator. He flew in the South Pacific during World War II, and was on the original crew of the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Enterprise as well as other ship and shore duties. Following retirement, he started a second career of 17 years at Applied Technologies in Sunnyvale, CA.
He started a third career on the Monterey Peninsula volunteering in a variety of organizations. When asked to do volunteer work, he would reply ok, "as long as I don't get paid".
Jane and Spud fell in love with Pacific Grove when Spud attended Navy Line School at the Naval Postgraduate School, and chose to retire here.
Among his many involvements were the Navy League of the United States, Naval Order of the United States, Sons of the American Revolution, Shriners, Pacific Grove Methodist Church, Monterey Maritime Museum, and Hospital on the Hill (part of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula) where he worked over 5,000 volunteer hours.
He was an active member of the Masons, receiving the Hiram Award, one of their highest honors.
Spud was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 67 years, Jane Williams Lambing; son, Dave Lambing (Sally Emerson); and three grandchildren, Colin, Elyse, and Daniel.
There will be a celebration of Spud's life on August 9, 2014, at 2:00pm at Canterbury Woods Auditorium, 651 Sinex Ave., Pacific Grove.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner's Hospital, Sacramento, CA at Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
