MONTEREY, CA – Galyn C. Hammond died peacefully on May 10, 2014, a few days shy of his 92nd birthday, surrounded by his loving family. "Doc," as he was known, was born June 2, 1922 and had called the Monterey Peninsula his home since 1930. Graduating from Monterey Union High School (1939) and Hartnell College (1941), Doc went on to complete the first year of the Veterinary College at U.C. Davis before enlisting in the U.S.
to serve in
. He also studied civil engineering at
, prior to being discharged from the Army after the war ended. Galyn later attended Don Martin's School of Radio & Television Arts & Sciences in Hollywood, after which he would return to Monterey to work at KMBY radio and television. Doc worked at KMBY for 23 years, the last 16 of which he served as the General Manager of KMBY radio. He then opened his own advertising agency, which he operated for 30 years before retiring.
Doc was a member and Past Master of Monterey Lodge 217 F&AM, Asiya Shrine, and San José Scottish Rite.
He leaves behind his lovely wife, Lu; son, Stephen and daughter, Denise DeVine. Doc was preceded in death by his eldest son, William Henry D. Hammond. Galyn leaves five grandsons: Geoffrey Hammond, Grahame Hammond, Gregory Hammond, Justin DeVine, and Spencer DeVine – all very talented and of whom he was very proud.
Galyn felt that he had a wonderful life, with a wonderful wife, with whom he was fortunate to have traveled to 59 different countries, and he photographed all of them. Doc was an excellent photographer, well known in the photographic community both locally and internationally. Doc had a passion for jazz and was a regular at the Monterey Jazz Festival. His photos of jazz legends, such as Dizzy Gillespie, were among his favorite photographs. Galyn was also fortunate to attend and photograph the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. He is now on his final trip to meet his maker…but without his camera.
Memorial services will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Monterey on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at 1:00 PM, followed by a reception at the family's home. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners' Hospital for Children, Carmel Foundation, or First Presbyterian Church of Monterey.
Doc will be missed by his family and all who knew him. He will be remembered for his fabulous voice, great bow ties, ever-present smile, and his amazing photography.
