Grace Lin Obituary
PALO ALTO – Born Grace Lin in Anhui Province in China, Grace attended mission schools where she excelled in her studies. Known for her wit and leadership skills, she earned a teaching degree from Beijing National Normal University. She held various positions as teacher, dean of students, and principal from K-12 during WWII.
Closely tied to the Nationalist government, she and her husband, Ting Su, fled Beijing in a daring escape on a small plane in 1949. They lived in Indiana where her husband completed graduate studies in education, then settled in Seaside and Pacific Grove where they both taught in the DLI's Chinese Mandarin Department from the 50s to the 70s. Grace also taught some summer language classes at the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies. Widowed, Grace settled near her children in Silicon Valley in the early 80s, where she helped found a Chinese Christian Church of which she was profoundly dedicated.
Grace is survived by her two brothers (Mr. Ting Fan, and Mr. Ting An Lin); two daughters (Mabel and Ruth); a son-in-law (James Wheat); and two grandchildren (Jennifer and James Wheat); two nieces (Olivia and Sophia Lin); and a nephew (Daniel Lin) and other relatives in Mainland China.
Viewing will take place Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday, November 22, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. A memorial service will held at Palo Alto's Alta Mesa Memorial Chapel, Friday, November 22, 2013 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Donations may be made in her name to The Chinese Christian Church of Mountain View, The Salvation Army, or American Breast Cancer Association.
