Capt. Malcolm C. Brown II, USNR Obituary
PACIFIC GROVE – Capt. Malcolm Cotton Brown II, USNR, age 90, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Del Monte Residence, Pacific Grove, CA. He is survived by his sister, Barbara Brown Minckley; his four children: David Brewer Brown, Malcolm Brewer Brown, Caroline Riley Brown Altomare, and Susan Riley Brown and his former wife, Barbara Brewer Brown.
Capt. Brown was born in Evanston, IL in 1923, grew up in the area, and entered the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD in 1941. He graduated in 1944 and served in the Navy until 1979, retiring at the rank of Captain. At retirement, Capt. Brown received three commendations for meritorious service and outstanding performance of duties from the Secretary of the Navy and from the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet. Following retirement from the Navy, Capt. Brown was engaged in a business career that included managerial and executive experience in sales, marketing, product development, manufacturing, market research, and long range planning with companies including Libby-Owens-Ford, United Technologies Inc., and UBS-Paine-Webber.
Capt. Brown was named after his uncle, Malcolm Cotton Brown, who received training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) and in Canada, then joined the Royal Air Force in England during WW I, and was killed when his plane crashed in 1918. An annual monetary award is still given in his honor, by M.I.T., to a student with high academic standing in physics who plans to pursue research in experimental physics.
