Marjorie Collins Matthews
"Jerry" Foote
January 5, 1922 ~ July 5, 2010

CARMEL VALLEY, CA - On July 5, 2010, Jerry Foote, a long-time resident, died in Gainesville, Florida, where she had been living in recent years after suffering from severe dementia. Jerry was born on January 5, 1922, in Houston, Texas, where her father, Edward Kennedy Matthews, an Army Air Corps pilot, was stationed at Ellington Field. After his death in 1926, Jerry and her younger brother, Edward Kennedy Matthews, moved with their mother, Sarah Collins Matthews, to Washington, D.C. Jerry attended school in Washington on scholarship, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from George Washington University. Jerry was working at the War Department when she me her future husband, Edward Potter Foote, a West Point cadet. Jerry and Eddy were married at Fort Meyer Chapel in Fort Meyer, Virginia, on November 20, 1943. Jerry enthusiastically supported Eddy's 30-year Air Force career, moving 27 times, living often in Virginia when Eddy was stationed at the Pentagon, until they retired to Carmel Valley.
Jerry had a wide variety of interests and hobbies. She was an accomplished pianist and linguist, avid reader, wonderful cook, and always a gracious host. She was an expert gardener and flower arranger, concentrating particularly on antique roses and California native plants. For a time, Jerry wrote a gardening column in the Carmel Valley Outlook. Active as a volunteer and devoted churchwoman, Jerry enjoyed long and repeated service on her parish vestry and altar guild, as president in 1985 of the Carmel Valley Property Owners Association, and, in furtherance of her fundamental concern for environmental issues, developing the 20-year Carmel Valley Master Plan adopted in 1986 and promoting the work of the Big Sur Land Trust as a Trustee. Appointed to the Monterey County Planning Commission and the Parks and Recreation Board, Jerry received the Carmel Valley Chamber of Commerce Good Egg, an award for outstanding community service. Jerry and Eddy loved to travel, and Jerry had a love for Paris and most things French but delighted in Italian gardens even more.
Eddy predeceased Jerry in 1993 and their son, Edward Potter Foote, Jr., died in 2001. Jerry is survived by their daughter, Sally Harris Foote and her husband, Forrest S. Crawford; their son, Richard Stuart Foote and his wife, Suzanne Girard Foote and their children, Thomas, James, and Darcy Foote; and Teddy's daughters, Alexandra Foote Barker and Elizabeth Foote Robinson.
Jerry's Memorial Service will be held at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 28003 Robinson Canyon Road, Carmel, CA 93923, on October 9, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., with interment and lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Dunstan's or the charity of ones choice.
