Mark Richard Wendland Obituary
MONTEREY – Rev. Mark Richard Wendland, 64, passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2014 after a brief illness. His wife of 36 years, Jackie, was by his side. Mark was born at Ft. Ord Army Hospital, the son of Lt. Col. Richard and Shirley Wendland.
Rev. Wendland graduated from University of Nebraska (Lincoln) with a degree in Music Education. After teaching high school, he attended St. Paul School of Theology (Methodist) earning a Master of Divinity degree two days after marrying Jackie on May 13, 1978. They recently celebrated their anniversary in Princeville, Kauai, a favorite destination.
Mark was a dedicated pastor for 40 years, serving churches in Springfield, NE, Sacramento, Turlock, Lafayette, Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel. Mark and Jackie have lived in Monterey for 23 years. Mark was Chaplain for Hospice of the Central Coast. Until 2014, he was a Staff Chaplain at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He was longtime Rotarian and served on the Board of California-Nevada United Methodist Homes (Forest Hill Manor) and the STAR Foundation.
A man of many skills, Mark was a traveler, singer, runner, gardener, hiker, golfer, cook, and an avid Nebraska football and PGA Golf fan. With his beautiful tenor voice he sang with Carmel Bach Festival Chorus, Contare con Vivo, and I Cantori di Carmel, which he co-founded. His skill in music and inspired preaching contributed to church growth wherever he served.
In addition to his wife, Jackie, and beloved cats, Kachina and Sinja, Mark is survived by three brothers: William (Windsor Locks, CT), David (Tucson, AZ), and Daniel (Buckeye, AZ); two sisters, Carol (Concord, NC) and Sue (Gilbert, AZ); one aunt, Betty Coy (Soquel); three nieces, four nephews, and five cousins.
A service to celebrate Mark's life and ministry will we held on July 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at First UMC (Butterfly Church) Pacific Grove, 915 Sunset Dr., Pacific Grove. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Mark R. Wendland Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation for Monterey County, 2354 Garden Road, Monterey, CA 93940.
