CARMEL – Robert I. Chien was born in Chengdu on November 29, 1922. An open attitude, curious mind and high energy carried him through rigorous education and a military liaison position with the U.S. Army in China, through post-war graduate education at the
University of Minnesota
and through American industry, consultancy work and professorial duties in Chicago. Appreciation of his good fortune accompanied retirement first to Pebble Beach and then to Carmel. This full engaged life ended July 25, 2014 as it was lived – with a kind and determined heart.
He is acutely missed by his wife, Nancy; children, Agnes (Howard), Bruce (Susan) and Grace; by his grandchildren, Sterling (Irene), Cat, Sarah and Abby; by sisters, Nancy and Loretta and numerous nieces and nephews; and by the many who experienced his kind regard and gentle ways.
The family thanks Drs. Don Goldman and Paul Tocchet and the staff at Carmel Valley Manor for sensitive, wise guidance and caring.
Services will be private. Dr. Chien may be remembered and honored by acts of kindness and/or gifts that create opportunity for others.
