Elaine Green Obituary

Elaine Green
Feb. 25, 1942 - July 19, 2017
Pebble Beach
Elaine Terry Green of Pebble Beach passed away on July 19th, 2017. She was the wife of Kenneth Green, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage. Born in Los Angeles, CA, in 1942, she was the daughter of George and Lillian Jacobs. She attended Morningside High School (class of '59), El Camino Community College (A.A. '61) and UCSB (B.A. '63). She taught for four years in Manhattan Beach, then moved with her new husband Ken to Pebble Beach where she primarily taught first grade at Carmel River School for the next 37 years. After retirement she continued to substitute teach for another 12 years, making her teaching career one that spanned over five decades.
For Elaine, teaching was a life path. Her calm, steady voice and humor could tame and empower the most rambunctious collection of first graders. As stated by a long-time colleague and friend, "She teaches from the heart and soul of the human spirit. She makes me proud of my profession. No one gives children a better start. No one."
She created an environmental library, started the recycling program, received honors from her peers and local organizations for her work on environmental education, and the year she retired was awarded the prestigious Lou Flagg Award for Excellence in Teaching.
She was never without at least two dogs throughout her life and she was a long-time supporter of the SPCA. She loved to knit, and with her friends and family she also shared a love for dining out, shopping, plays, movies, babies, and sweets.
You were a loving, beautiful, kind, sweet, dear force-of-nature, Elaine, and we were honored to have spent time with you. You will be forever missed.
Elaine is survived by her husband Ken of Pebble Beach, son Adam (Dena) Green of Santa Barbara, granddaughter Ella Stephens-Green of Fresno, sister Kara Jacobs of Laguna Niguel, brother Mike (Linda) Jacobs of Newport Beach, as well as many beloved nephews, nieces and their children. She also leaves behind two dogs, Mini and Cooper, and hundreds of students spanning 50 years who she loved like her own children.
A Celebration of Life will be held on August 7th, 2017 at 1:30 pm in the afternoon at the Mission Ranch, 26270 Dolores Street in Carmel, CA.
Memorial donations can be made to Carmel River School c/o Jay Marden, 15th Ave & Monte Verde St, Carmel, CA 93923 or the SPCA of Monterey County at 1002 Monterey Salinas Hwy, Salinas CA 93908.

Miss Jacobs was my third grade teacher at Pacific Elementary School in Manhattan Beach, California. She inspired me to become a Teacher. She was the one who believed in me when I did not know how to do so myself. Instead of putting me at the reading table where the kids wore headphones to learn phonics, she invited me up to her desk to read "Little Women" to her- just the two of us. She introduced us to the art of Vincent van Gogh and took us to the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art. She wore her hair in an iconic 1960s frosted flip, and she drove a stunningly new blue Chevrolet Impala. She was smart and beautiful; clever and daring. I wrote to her quite a few years ago and expressed my gratitude towards the end of my own lengthy teaching career. She may not have remembered me after all these years, but I will never forget her.

Elaine Green was a most wonderful teacher! My sons went to River School and my younger son, Jamie Tolan, was lucky enough to have Mrs. Green as his First Grade teacher. She was always calm and gracious with her students. I think she mesmerized them with her calm demeanor! She also was extremely interested in each one of them and full of fun herself. We brought in frog tadpoles at some point and she put them in a nice aquarium in the classroom and fed them entire heads of the best butter lettuce! Most impressive! She was lovely. Our condolences to her family.
