Evelyn B. Rogers
February 24, 1920 ~ February 28, 2013
PACIFIC GROVE - Evelyn B. Rogers, 93, was a resident of the Monterey Peninsula for over 66 years. Born February 24, 1920 in Dexter, Michigan, she grew up in Ann Arbor and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1942 with a degree in social work. After college, she and a friend escaped to sunny California from the cold Michigan winters, although she always remained a devoted University of Michigan fan. She found work in Los Angeles at an Army Depot, where she met a lieutenant named Orville Rogers. They married on December 3, 1943, and had 64 years together until his death in 2008.Ê
Evelyn and Orville moved to Carmel in 1946, when Orville took a job teaching at Sunset School. Evelyn was a long-time, faithful member of St. Timothy Lutheran church, and was a substitute teacher for many years with Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. She was also a member of the Littlebits chapter of the Children's Home Society, the AAUW, the 20-40 Club, and many bridge clubs. She and her husband traveled the world with family and friends after retirement, and she was always ready for the next trip. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and especially enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Janis Rogers Dewar (Tom) of Alamo and Diane Marie Williams (Gary) of Pacific Grove; six grandchildren; and a sister, Eileen Crawford of Lansing, Michigan.Ê
The family would like to thank the staff at Forest Hill Manor for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carmel Valley Kiwanis Foundation, P.O. Box 485, Carmel Valley, CA 93924 (specify "Orville Rogers Scholarship"), or to the St. Timothy Foundation, 52 Soledad Drive, Monterey, CA, 93940.
A memorial service will be held at St. Timothy Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 2:00pm.
