Dr.  Glenn Jung Obituary
CARMEL, CA – Glenn Jung, born in Lyons, KS to Walter and Elsie Jung on October11, 1924, died
on September 11, 2013 in Carmel. Raised on a farm near Rocky Ford, CO, Glenn attended a one-room school, and earned a scholarship to Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, where he studied until his induction into the Army Air Corps in 1943 during WWII.
He studied Meteorology at M.I.T. in Boston, MA. He met his wife, Jean Clements, at Camp Detrick, MD, where she was a civilian researcher. Glenn was honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1947, before their marriage in 1948. They celebrated their 57th anniversary before Jean's death in 2005.
In 1949, Glenn earned a Bachelors Degree in Meteorology at M.I.T. and a Masters Degree in January, 1952. He taught, and studied for his PhD degree at Texas A&M in College Station. Glenn moved his family of four to Norway to study Oceanography on a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Oslo for a year. Returning to Texas A&M, he received his PhD in Oceanography. Glenn became a Professor of Oceanography at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA in 1958. The family of five moved to Monterey, and welcomed two sons in the next three years. Glenn retired from NPS in 1984.
He was a member of American Meteorological Society and Sigma Xi. Glenn played several instruments in the band and orchestra in school. He also loved traveling. He served as Elder in the Presbyterian Church. Glenn and Jean were members of First Presbyterian Church in Monterey and Carmel Foundation. They supported missionaries, and charities, volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Yellow Brick Road, and served as adult literacy teachers.
Glenn and Jean are survived by five children: Lynn (Charles) Parsons, Larry (Sally) Jung, Leslie (Kyle) Blankenship, Richard (Susana) Jung, and Dale (Colleen) Jung. Their grandchildren are: Cameron (Larry) Adkison, Daniel (Theresa) Parsons, Matthew (Suzanne) Jung, Christina (Rohan) Murphy, Courtney (Tony) Salamone, Lily Jean Jung, and Olivia Jung. Four great-grandsons are: Tyler Adkison, and Benjamin, Joshua, and Elijah Jung.
A memorial service will be November 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Monterey, 501 El Dorado St., where memorial contributions are appreciated.
