Kenneth J. Dekker Obituary

MONTEREY, CA – Kenneth J. Dekker passed away June 8, 2014 after a series of prolonged illnesses.
He is survived by his ex-wife and loyal friend, Mary Guilfoy Dekker and children, Laura Dekker, Paul Dekker (Maura) and Julie Aronson (Peter); grandfather to Colman and Quinn Dekker, Elizabeth and Madeleine Aronson; uncle to James and David Brooks and Mary Brooks Barker, Conor and Keenan Harlan, Jackson Guilfoy, Danielle Dekker-Urban and Joseph Dekker; brother-in-law to Martha Brooks, John Guilfoy, Jane Guilfoy and Daniel Guilfoy; brother to John (Geri), James (Lorraine) and Larry (deceased); proud grandson of the late Sergy and Clara Dow.
Ken was born to John and Victoria Dekker and raised in San Francisco's Sunset District. After graduating from Holy Name of Jesus Grammar School in 1955, he matriculated to Saint Ignatius High School, graduating in 1959. While at Saint Ignatius, Ken was known for both his athletic prowess and his academic achievements. On the baseball diamond, he played on the Varsity team for four years, winning two AAA San Francisco City Championships. In his senior year, Ken was voted to the All-City Team and garnered Northern California Player of the Year honors. In the classroom Ken was a gifted, motivated student and recognized as a National Merit Scholar.
He then attended U.C. Berkeley on a baseball scholarship and while there, in 1960, signed a bonus contract with the New York Yankees and played three seasons (1960-1962) in their farm system.
After completion of his playing days, Ken became a self-made entrepreneur, forging a highly successful career in real estate. He possessed an active mind and enjoyed a wide range of interests, including philately and blues music. Ken was a voracious reader, continually educating himself on such topics as Russian history and world politics.
The family would like to thank Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, Windsor Monterey Care Center and Peggy's Home Care for the kindness shown to Ken during his final days.
Private services are pending.
