Michael John Smith Obituary
PACIFIC?GROVE – Michael John Smith, 60, passed away at home after a six-year fight with Glioblastoma Brain Cancer. We like to call him our "Miracle Man." He surpassed all statistics. He was strong until his last days. Born and raised in Monterey to a fifth-generation Monterey family, Mike was number nine of ten children. He married Julie Ann Brown of Carmel and they raised their two children, Sean and Mollie, in Pacific Grove.
Many of Mike's happiest memories were those of working as a Journeyman Carpenter and General Contractor at jobs that included Spanish Bay, Portola Plaza, La Playa Hotel, Mervyn's, and many private residences throughout Carmel, Monterey, and Pebble Beach; spending time with his two children; and telling entertaining stories of growing up in a large family. Mike always enjoyed teaching others anything, but especially the craft of carpentry, including the right way to cut a roof and make tight-fitting joints in ceiling molding. Mike never let his diagnosis stop him from living life. He completed a large remodel of his living room right before his second surgery in 2013, rode his bicycle everywhere, and most impressively played pool tournaments up until the end, coming in first and second place many times.
He is survived by his son, Sean Smith; daughter, Mollie Collyer (David); former wife, Julie Brown Smith; brothers, Earl T. Smith and Ralph Smith; sisters, Janet Fletcher, Simone Hamade, Priscilla Morrow, Helen Smith, Mary Snyder, and Pam Smith; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 9:30am at San Carlos Cathedral, 500 Church St., Monterey, with a reception to follow (11:00am to 3:00pm) at Mission Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero, Monterey.
The family would like to thank the following doctors for their continuous care and support throughout the years: Dr. Nancy Rubin, Dr. Patrick Feehan, Dr. Michael Lebowitz, Dr. Theodore Kaczmar, and Dr. Glenn Hudgens as well as Hospice of the Central Coast. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the family may go to Union Bank, 580 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove, CA 93950, payable to Mollie Collyer, account number 0053957502.
