Robert E. Coffin
Lt. Gen., U.S. Army, (Ret.)
June 15, 1917 ~ March 17, 2010

Carmel - Robert Coffin, age 92, died March 17 in Palo Alto from the effects of a stroke. He was born on June 15, 1917 in Bellingham, Washington.
Bob graduated from Stanford University, where he was in ROTC. He received his commission in the U.S. Army in 1940 and served in North Africa and Europe during World War II. His 34-year Army career included service in Korea, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium and Washington, D.C. When he retired in 1974, Bob and his wife, Joan, settled permanently in Carmel, California.
In Carmel, Bob was active with the Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, Red Cross, SPCA, Catholic Charities, and the Monterey Bay Yacht Club. He also taught photography at the Carmel Foundation and was a docent at the Carmel Mission.
Joan predeceased Bob in 2008 after 67 years of marriage. Bob is survived by their three children, Barbara (Jay) Kittle, Lynne (Larry) Johnston, Jim (Karen Hayes); his grandchildren, Tom (Su), Marjorie (David), Kelsey, Jared, Molly and Shilin; and two great- grandchildren, Anna and Robert.
Bob will be remembered fondly by his family for his warmth and generosity, his keen intellect and curiosity and his sense of humor.
The family will hold a private memorial. Donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box, 1884, Monterey, CA 93942.
