Steve peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2013 in the arms of his companion, Kimberland Wood, at her home in Lagunitas after a brief bout with cancer.
Steve was an avid surfer locally in Moss Landing and frequently traveled to exotic locations to catch a wave. His other passions included fishing, poke poling, and camping with family and friends. Steve also enjoyed playing his bass guitars and jamming with his fellow musicians.
During the 26 years of Steve's recovery, he touched so many lives and helped others on their journey to a healthy, productive life. He believed strongly in giving back the gift that was given to him and was always there for anyone who needed support or a "friendly ear".
Steve was born in Salinas, California and graduated from North Salinas High School in 1970. He established and successfully ran Young Roofing Co. from 1992 to 2008. Steve's spiritual journey began in his early 20s which led him to embrace the Buddhist teachings. He was a dedicated student of insight meditation and spent the last six years as a caretaker at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara and Gordon Young and his first wife, Madeline Young. He is survived by his companion, Kimberland Wood; his sons, Aaron Young (Kathleen) of Salinas and Richard Corona of San Jose; his brother, Chris (Gail) Young; his sister, Katie (Stephen) Andrus; nephews, Wyatt and Shane Young; nieces, Kelsey and Jillian Andrus; grandchildren, Priscilla, Richard, Raymond and Nevaeh of San Jose, CA; and his other extended family members.
Steve's kind and gentle way, huge heart with a smile to match and laughter that always reached his eyes will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Land softly dear father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend…you are loved.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held at Royal Oaks Park (Live Oak picnic area) in Prunedale on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.
