Te-Tseng "T. T." Liu
~ 2012 ~
MONTEREY - Te-Tseng Liu, age 100 years, passed away October 9, 2012 at his residence. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.
Born in Zong Bao Bai Kou, China, Te-Tseng attended Yan Jing University in Beijing, graduating with a Bachelor's in Sociology. He was a Professor of Sociology in Kunming at the University of Yunnan. In 1950 he moved his family to the United States settling in Monterey where he taught Chinese Mandarin at the former Army Language School, now known as the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. He continued with his education obtaining a Master's Degree in Asian Culture from Stanford University. After 48 years of teaching at the DLIFLC he retired at the age of 86.
Te-Tseng was an avid writer, golfer, tennis player and gardener. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren. He would spend time with each grandchild individually, taking them to tennis, the golf course, Dennis the Menace Park, Monterey Sports Center or while tending the vegetables, succulents and flowers in his garden. His adult children remember he started all of his garden's plants from seed, the special Chinese Country cuisine he would whip up at midnight, and the nights spent crabbing on the wharf.
Te-Tseng is survived by Miranda, his wife of 70 years; his four children: Suzanna Schuler (John), Edward Liu (Phyllis), Yvonne Liu (Jim Krider) and Grace Liu-Smith (Mike); and his nine grandchildren: Matthew Schuler, Margie Schuler, Tony Liu, Danielle Liu, Todd Gilardy, Ryan Gilardy, Brittany Gilardy, Maile Smith and Michael Smith.
