MONTEREY - William Douglas Adam (Doug), age 91, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital in Monterey.
Doug was born in Portland, Oregon. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He attended Willamette University and Duke University. He graduated from the University of Southern California, remaining a loyal Trojan fan all his life. Doug had dual majors in college of electrical engineering and journalism. He worked in the aerospace industry for several years before founding the W.D. Adam Company in Costa Mesa, California, a plastics manufacturing company. Among many other endeavors, Doug developed and designed housing for sensitive instruments for several Silicon Valley firms. He held patent designs for a multitude of plastics applications.
Doug had a passionate love of the ocean, surfing almost daily until he was in his 70s. He was an avid reader, traveler, skier and bike rider.
Although afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease, Doug retained his long term memory and wit to the end.
Doug is survived by his devoted wife, Peggy; sons, Stephen and Tom; granddaughters, Carrie and Sarah; great granddaughter, Ellie; step-children, Shawn and Mike and step-grandchildren, Jason, Jori and Jenna. Doug's niece, Barbie, kept in loving contact during Doug's long Alzheimer journey. Doug would also want mention to be made of his much beloved and faithful friend and caregiver, Maria Bravo, who was with him to the end. The compassionate care given to Doug by the staff of Ave Maria Convalescent Hospital is gratefully acknowledged.
Cremation is under the direction of The Paul Mortuary. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 10:30am at The Church in the Forest, 3152 Forest Lake Road, Pebble Beach, California.
