Yvan Nopert Obituary
Carmel, CA – Yvan Nopert passed away at the age of 86 after having said goodbye to his family, his sweet sister, Georgette and his many friends. He was born in Charleroi, Belgium, the son of Regina and Robert Nopert, restaurateurs of a well-known resort in Loverval, Belgium. The resort comprised of the famous Tennis Club "Reine Astrid" where Yvan became an excellent tennis player and continued on at Pebble Beach, The Beach and Tennis Club.
In the family tradition, Yvan attended the famous Namur (Belgium) chef's school. Sometime after graduation, he was hired by the Belgian Embassy in Washington, DC where he began his French Chef career. There, Yvan met his first wife, Dionne, a French interpreter from Oakland, CA. They made their way to New York City where he worked at the Four Seasons. After having brought his mother and sister to America in 1956, they made their way together in the family Cadillac with all their belongings, to the little beach village of Carmel by-the-Sea where Yvan started "L'Escargot" restaurant, first on Dolores St., later at its present location on Mission St.
In 1961, Yvan brought over from Belgium the rest of his family, his uncle "Max" and his aunt "Aimee" with their daughter, Patricia, to help him manage L'Escargot. L'Escargot on several occasions saw many stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood…and some of our Presidents such as Gerald Ford. Yvan was very successful in his business. L'Escargot is now a well-known Carmel landmark. He was not so successful in his marriages as he mourned three wives, Dionne, Carol and Joanne.
Yvan is survived by his sister, Georgette Toldi of Carmel (husband, Yancsi) and his cousin, Patricia Troxell of Carmel; as well as his stepdaughter, Stephanie Sharp (husband, Roger) who watched over him the last eight years since losing his wife, Joanne. He is also survived by several cousins, stepchildren, step-grandchildren and his beloved dog (his constant companion) "ChouChou".
In lieu of flowers, donations to Yvan's favorite charity, The SPCA for Monterey County, would be appreciated. At Yvan's request, no services will be held. Please visit www.thepaulmortuary.com to sign Yvan's guest book and leave messages for his family.
