Fermina "Fern" Davis Obituary
Pacific Grove – Fermina (Fern) Davis passed away July 13, 2014. On July 7, Fern celebrated her 106th birthday with a big party at Forest Hill Manor. Fern was born in Paradise Valley, Nevada to Augusta Echevarria and Cristina Plaza, emigrants from the Basque region of Northern Spain. Fermina was the oldest of six children. Her parents owned the Paradise Valley Hotel and the family worked in the hotel. Woodstoves provided heat and water was hand-pumped from the wells. Lights were coal oil lanterns and later gaslights.
She married Cecil Sparks Riley in 1928, and raised a son and daughter in Winnemucca, Nevada. Her husband died in a car accident in 1937, and Fern moved her family to Santa Cruz to work at the Palomar Hotel. Fern married Robert H. (Bob) Davis in 1939 and they lived in Oakland, CA before moving to Pacific Grove in 1950. They operated a grocery business called "Forest Hill Store" until 1981. Fern was widowed a second time in 1986 when Bob died in a boating accident.
Fern enjoyed golf, traveling, and playing cards. She maintained her membership in the Order of Eastern Star for over 70 years. She was a member of the Lighthouse Keepers and volunteered for the Cancer Discovery Shop. She loved her birthday parties and her family.
Fern was predeceased by her son, Cecil (Cec) Riley. She was also predeceased by all her siblings, Victoria, Mary, Joe, Gus, and Peggy. She is survived by her daughter, Joy Riley Fugitt, of Pacific Grove; her son, R. Lynn Davis (Lydia) of Carmel Valley; daughter-in-law, Barbara Riley of Orinda; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Fern lived in her own home until age 100, and then moved into Forest Hill Manor. The family wishes to thank the staff at Forest Hill Manor Assisted Living and Health Center for Fern's care for the past four years.
Private graveside funeral services have been held. Please visit www.thepaulmortuary.com to sign Fern's guestbook and leave messages for her family.
