John David Babcock Obituary
MONTEREY – After a long and difficult illness, David passed away without discomfort Sunday August 3, 2014 in the arms of his loving husband of 22 years Drew Chernoy, and in the company of family and friends. He is at peace.

He is best remembered for his many years at Brinton's in Carmel, and later for his own beloved gourmet kitchen store Clementine's in Del Rey Oaks. David's career started at a young age at the local Moose Lodge where his devoted parents John and Barbara Babcock were active members. Before Clementine's, David managed the private Quail Creek Ranch Equestrian estate. He moved on to the California Culinary Academy College of Food, first as a student and then as an instructor. He finished his education with 2 years in Paris at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu culminating in the Grand Diplôme Patisserie, for which he was most proud, before returning here to open Clementine's with Drew in 2002. David was a world traveler and an expert in fine food and wine, art, antiques, and most especially the music and life of Edith Piaf. He was fluent in both French and German, and was infamous for his bawdy humor. His charitable work included culinary events and contributions for Meals on Wheels, the SPCA, and other local organizations through his work at Clementine's.

David was born here and graduated Monterey High School (better known as John). He also leaves his sister Susan Rivait (Gulf Breeze, Florida) and her family Paul, Chris, and Nick along with other close relatives.

David and his family would like to thank the staff at Community Hospital for their compassionate and dedicated care during his 5 year journey to peace. Special thanks to Irving McKinney and everyone at Kernes Pool in Monterey, David's special place of refuge.

No funeral is planned. A celebration of his life event will be announced later this year.
