Kathleen Anne Luke Obituary
Kathleen Anne Luke
1951 ~ 2011

CARMEL - Kathleen Anne Luke, a longtime resident of the Monterey Peninsula, passed away peacefully from complications resulting from ovarian cancer on February 7, 2011 in Wiesbaden, Germany.
The daughter of Alfred Langford McKown and Lois Virginia Moyer, Kathleen was born in Minnehaha, South Dakota in 1951. Her early years were spent growing up overseas in Metz, France while Kathleen's remaining years were spent in Wuezburg, Wiesbaden and Kaiserslautern, Germany.
Married in 1993, Kathleen began her professional career at the U.S. Naval Ophthalmic Support and Training Activity in Norfolk, Virginia and was later employed at the Naval Postgraduate School in the Comptroller's Office as a supervisory fiscal analyst and member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers before being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1994, metastatic to the lungs and brain. Excellent medical treatment provided by Dr. Grant Swanson at Monterey Bay Oncology and Dr. Michael McDermott at the University of California, San Francisco resulted in remission in 1996, allowing Kathleen to volunteer as an Auxiliary at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula before moving to Germany with her husband in 1997.
Born a blue baby, suffering a congenital heart defect, referred to tetralogy of Fallot, Kathleen underwent open heart surgery at age two and 12 with successful results. With health concerns aside, Kathleen was very well-traveled. She attended high school in Toul, France where her father was stationed with the U.S. Air Force. During Kathleen's remaining years, she continued to travel throughout Europe and was particularly fond of Oberammergau, Germany and Ireland.
Kathleen is survived by her husband, Ethan and miniature dachshund, Sophie; sisters and brothers-in-law, Judith and Robert Zatorski, Belford, New Jersey; Ginger and David Mullen, Frankfort, Ohio; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Debbye McKown, Phoenix, Arizona; Robert and Susan McKown, Virginia Beach, Virginia; close friends Shirley, Angela, Marilyn, Megan and many others.
A private graveside service followed by a family memorial celebration will be held March 5, 2011. Kind to children and animals, Kathleen will be deeply missed.
