Kenneth Shannon Jones Obituary
Kenneth Shannon Jones
December 19, 1960 ~ May 24, 2011

CARMEL VALLEY - Kenneth Shannon Jones, 50, died peacefully on May 24, 2011 from ALS (aka "Lou Gehrig's Disease"). Ken will be remembered for facing the inevitable result of his diagnosis with the same energy, unwavering resolve, and infectious smile with which he approached every stage of his life.
Ken was born December 19, 1960 in Ramsey, NJ and was a standout student-athlete at Ramsey High School. Although a football recruit at Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA), he also ran track, and capped his collegiate career by winning the 1983 IC4A decathlon championship, setting a school record that stands today. A member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and Chi Psi fraternity, he graduated with a B.S. Mechanical Engineering in 1983.
After starting his career at Hughes Aircraft (Brea, CA) Jones earned Master's Degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering, and an MBA. He worked in engineering and product management prior to launching his own business, Monterey-based Blue Star Medical, in 2004. Ken was an avid golfer, and pitched in the Monterey city baseball league. He was a member of the Pacheco Club, Carmel Valley Ranch CC, and Carmel Presbyterian Church. In the last months of his life, Ken took opportunities to witness to his faith, both at church and as a guest on a local television talk show discussion of end-of-life issues.
Ken and his wife, Karin married in September 2009. Although short in years, their marriage was one of profound depth and closeness. Observed one of Ken's fraternity brothers after a visit, "Trust me when I tell you that these two are soul mates... They spend all of their time together and their marriage is what we should all aspire to when we exchange vows of Ôfor better or worse, in sickness and in health'."
Ken was preceded in death by his father, Roger D. Jones and brother-in- law, Terry Wick. He is survived by his wife, Karin; mother, Ruth McAfee Fenton (Ben); and siblings, Roger W. Jones (Jennifer) and Kathryn Verna (Vincent). He also leaves Karin's children, Nate Holdridge (Christina) and Bryna Ramones (Riley) and six grandchildren; niece, Lindsay Margeton (Rob) and nephews, Harrison Jones, and Cooper and Jacob Wick. Ken shared a special relationship with his uncle and aunt, Dr. and Mrs. William McAfee, enjoying annual trips to the NCAA Final Four with Dr. McAfee and friends.
Special thanks to Central Coast VNA Hospice, and all the family and friends who have been so supportive during this difficult time. A memorial is planned for June 20, 2011 at 3:00pm at Calvary in Monterey. In lieu of flowers, donations to the UCSF Medical Center (ALS Research) would be appreciated.
