MONTEREY - Salvatore Asaro, age 72, died Tuesday, December 6, 2011 after a brief battle with lung cancer. Sal was born July 2, 1939 in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, Italy to his parents, Andrea and Antonina (DeSanti) Asaro.
Prior to Sal's arrival to the U.S. he served in the Italian Navy for two years. He came to Monterey on March 22, 1965 at the age of 26 and married Antonietta Aliotti on April 24, 1965.
He was a commercial fisherman for 57 years. From the time he was nine years old to 66 years old, he fished in Monterey Bay, San Francisco Bay, Southern California and Egegik, Alaska. He fished anchovies, sardines, squid, salmon, herring and many other fisheries. His passion and favorite pastime was mending nets. He even mended nets for several exhibits at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Monterey Wax Museum.
Sal enjoyed watching soccer and his favorite team was Juventus. He looked forward to football season, as he was a loyal San Francisco 49ers fan and excited about the successful year they're having. Sal enjoyed gathering with friends and family and playing cards. He loved his vacations, especially cruises. He enjoyed going to Italian weddings so he could sing. Everyone who met him could not help but fall in love with him. He was fun loving, had a big heart and always had a smile on his face. He welcomed everyone with open arms.
Sal is survived by Antonietta, his loving wife of 46 years; four children, Antonina "Nina" Leavenworth (Scott), Andrew Asaro (Kellie), Francesca "Fran" Aiello (Rich), Domenic "Meco" Asaro (Nellie); 10 grandchildren, Alexandria, Adam and Nicholas Leavenworth, Rosario, Salvatore and Maria Aiello and Drew, Santino, Salvatore and Dominique Asaro. Also left to mourn are his three sisters, Rosa D'Aguanna of San Pedro, CA; twin sister, Vita Asaro and Sara Asaro of Mazara del Vallo, Sicily; and brother, Leonardo Asaro of Sicily. Sal is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Giacomino.
A visitation will be Thursday, December 8, 2011 (TONIGHT) from 3:00-7:00 p.m, with vigil service at 7:00 p.m. both at Mission Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero, Monterey. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, December 9, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at the San Carlos Cathedral.
