1922 ~ 2012
MONTEREY - Clayton Askew was born on April 28, 1922 to Charles B. Askew and Alice Weston in Hanford, California and was raised from the age of 3 in Carmel.
He graduated from Monterey High School in 1940 and was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps stationed in England during WWII. He married his high school sweetheart Patrina Dolores Cricchio on June 14, 1942.
After the war, Clayton enrolled in carpenter's school and honed those skills to become a custom cabinetmaker until his retirement. He built the family home with adobe brick and redwood beams. Clayton was an avid hunter, and sports fisherman, passing on those skills to his children and friends. Clayton and Patrina traveled the U.S. in their RV where Patrina kept a diary, and together logged an envious amount of time RVing, camping and boating with family.
Clayton was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years on September 29, 2011, granddaughter, Katrina Hurd and brother, Luther Askew. He is survived by sons, Weston of Mesa, AZ, Mark (Judy) of Monterey and daughter, Alina Hurd (Chuck) of Monterey. He had nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. We are so grateful for his life, the lessons that he taught, and the example that he lived for us every day. Our parents were a team and they gave us unconditional love and endless support.
The family asks that all contributions be sent to the National Park Service (www.nps.gov). A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Mission Mortuary, Monterey, CA.
