Monterey - Birt Johnson, Sr., passed away Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula at the age of 91. He was born June 13, 1921 in Rison, Arkansas. He was a resident of the Monterey area since 1963.
Early in life at the age of 13, Birt began working to help support his mother (Bulah Johnson) and five siblings, Leon, Arthur, Molinda, Grace, and Lorene. He worked tirelessly to make sure his family was taken care of. He always made sure his family came first and foremost. He demonstrated what it was to be a man through his dedication in life to his family, the Lord and his country. While in the Army he served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War as a First Sergeant in an artillery unit.
He met his wife, Lenora Villa in Manila, Philippines; they married March 20, 1947. Together they had 10 children: Loudres, Antonio, Thelma, Joseph, Peter, Paul, Birt Jr., Edward, Nancy, and Mary. In 1963 the family moved to Seaside while he was stationed at Ft. Ord. After 22 years of service Birt retired from the Army. During his retirement he worked at Del Mesa Carmel.
Birt is survived by his sister, Grace; nine children: Antonio (Julie), Thelma (Jon), Joseph (Marilyn), Peter (Judy), Paul, Birt Jr. (Kathleen), Edward (Lynne), Nancy, and Mary (Dale); 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many other friends and family who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Loudres Johnson; wife, Lenora Villa Johnson; and his grandson, Robert S. Johnson.

A Viewing will be held Monday, December 10, 2012 from 4:00-7:00pm with Vigil at 7:00pm at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside. The Funeral Service is Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 10:00am, at the Fort Ord Military Community Chapel, General Jim Moore Blvd., Bldg. 4280.
