October 8, 1917 ~ December 16, 2012
Monterey, CA - Anna Gertrude Mary Collins was born at home in Whitestone, Queens, to Rose Mary McKeon Gubbins and Patrick Augustus Gubbins. She was the fourth of their eight children. Anne attended St. Agnes High School and worked in a Millinery Shop and for Sears and Roebuck before her marriage, September 7, 1940 to Thomas Aquinas Collins. Together they raised six children: Cathleen Freeman (Bill), Thomas Collins (Maureen), James Collins (Linda), Marguerite Collins/Otis (Dan), and Annemarie Collins/Rosenlund. Her youngest daughter, Patricia Collins/Morin, preceded her in death, January 2, 2000.
Anne was a lifelong homemaker. She and her husband, Tom retired to Lake of the Woods, in Fredericksburg, VA, in 1984. Many happy years were spent there and many friendships made. Anne enjoyed her volunteer work at her church thrift store, and working on fundraisers for Lake of the Woods' volunteer fire department. She also graciously hosted the flow of family and friends who visited from New York.
Upon her husband's passing in 1996, Anne moved to Monterey to be closer to her daughter, Cathleen and her son, James. For 15 years, she made her home at the Park Lane. Due to her good nature and good humor, she made many new friends during those years. Anne enjoyed crocheting, playing bridge, bingo and reading. She was a weekly patron of the Monterey Library's Bookmobile. In honor of her support, Anne's image can be seen on the Bookmobile. During her decline, she resided at Windsor Monterey Care Center.
Anne is survived by her sister, Alice Long of Bethpage, LI, NY; her sister, Mary Darcy of Mariposa, CA; and her brother, Patrick and sister-in-law, Evelyn Gubbins of Sayville , LI, NY. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren: William and Anne Freeman, Kevin Collins and Kristine Collins/Sheiffele, Erin Collins/Kelly and James Collins, Patricia Fieldsted and Sara Fieldsted/Thornton, Michael, Patrick and Cathleen Barnhill; and her 13 great grandchildren: Kira, Karina, Evalyn, Olivia, Grace, William, Caroline, Paige, Carli, Paul James, Logan, Jacob and Alex.
A Memorial Mass will be said Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 9:00am at San Carlos Cathedral, followed by a reception at the Elks Club of Monterey.
Anne's family wishes to thank Dr. Richard King and Anne's many caregivers at Windsor Monterey Care Center for the attentive care she received. Special thanks and appreciation goes to Hospice of the Central Coast for their loving care, support and Transitions Volunteers. Donations in Anne's name may be made to Hospice of the Central Coast.
