PACIFIC GROVE, CA - Donald passed away peacefully at his home on January 1, 2013 at the age of 71. He was born in Sparta, Wisconsin on November 29, 1941.
After graduating from high school in Seaside, CA, Donald joined the Navy and served on a ship off the coast of Vietnam. He joined the Monterey Peninsula Herald in 1965 as a photographer and then moved into the Photo Engraving Department. He retired in 2001 after working 36 years for The Herald.Ê
In 1967, in Pacific Grove, Don married Sharon McNutt. They resided in Carmel and Pacific Grove until Sharon's untimely death in a tragic auto accident in 1999. Ê
He was an avid photographer and pilot. During his retirement, he took wonderful trips to Europe, New Zealand, Canada and around the United States. Camera always in hand, he documented his travels and loved to process the photos himself when he arrived home.Ê
He will be greatly missed by his long-time friends, Valerie and Ron Carson of Cool, CA, Rochelle Trawick and her daughter, Elisa of Monterey and Kellye Valnizza and her son, Mark of Monterey, whom together made up his adoptive family; and by his special traveling companion, Gail Kihn of Sumas, WA.
Donald remarked recently, "I'm quite satisfied with the life I have lived."
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
