PEBBLE?BEACH – Colonel Arthur L. Belknap, age 87, passed peacefully at his home on March 6, 2013.
Born on June 2, 1925 to parents, Thurston and Joneta Hopkins Belknap, he grew up in Omaha, NE and enlisted in the
at age 16. He graduated from the University of Omaha in 1950, Dean's Honor Roll, with a BA in Business Administration. He later earned a Masters in Psychology.
Col. Belknap served in the United States Army for 30 years, serving as an enlisted man in North Africa, Italy and Germany during
, as a commissioned officer in Korea with the 40th Infantry and he served three tours in Vietnam before retiring at Fort Ord in Monterey in 1978. The Colonel is a recipient of many honors, including two Silver Stars, a
s, Legion of Merit awards, the Air Medal, commendation medals for service in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He was one of the most highly decorated soldiers in the country prior to the War in Afghanistan.
While living on the Peninsula, Col. Belknap was a member of the Monterey Bonsai Club, and the Carmel Art Association.
Col. Belknap is survived by his older brother, Robert Belknap (Omaha); four children, Kathleen Belknap Arnold (Lake Worth, FL), Arthur Lyle Belknap, Jr. (Phoenix, AZ), Jean Belknap Lenke (Philadelphia, PA), Jane Belknap Stevison (Hamilton, OH); grandchildren, Steven Belknap, Tiffany Belknap Dewees, Justin Belknap, Jeffrey Arnold, Matthew Arnold, Amelia Lenke, Paul Lenke, Erik Lenke, Margaret Stevison, Jacob Stevison and Lucas Stevison; as well as three great-grandchildren.
No funeral is planned. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery and family memorials will be private. The family suggests donations to Animal Friends Rescue Project of Pacific Grove,
