Paul S. Vaughan Jr.

1925 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Paul S. Vaughan Jr. Obituary
SOLEDAD – Paul S. Vaughan, Jr., 88, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 13, 1925 in Banning, California to Paul S. Vaughan, Sr., and Cecelia Chiesa Vaughan.
Paul's father worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, so his family lived in many parts of California until they eventually settled in Soledad in 1936. Paul, whose family called him "Bill," graduated from Gonzales High School. At 17, Paul left school during his senior year to join the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served in the South Pacific during WWII on the USS Nehenta Bay aircraft carrier. After the war, Paul returned to Soledad and took night classes to earn his diploma. He also worked as an ambulance driver and bank teller. He joined a folk dance group and in 1949 married his dance partner, the love of his life, Alice "Allie" Silveria. The happy couple raised eight children in the Soledad Mission District, where Paul worked as a farmer for nearly 50 years.
During their marriage, Paul and Allie would host many gatherings at their house, and always had the coffee on for friends and family who often stopped by for visits. The Christmas Eve celebration at the Vaughan house drew such a crowd of family and friends that gifts had to be opened in "rounds" because there was simply not enough space under the tree for all the gifts. After 49 wonderful years together, Allie unexpectedly passed away in 1999.
After Allie's passing, Paul enjoyed coffee every morning with his closest friends. Later, he liked staying home and visiting with friends and family. Paul lit up when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren came by. In his last years, Paul was able to stay at home thanks to the support and love of his family, and his wonderful caregivers, including Felipa Amarillas. During the times he could not be at home, Paul's family greatly appreciated the outstanding and loving care given to him by all those at Eden Valley Care Center in Soledad.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Cecelia Vaughan; his sisters, Haroldene Vaughan and Patricia Hoagland; his daughter-in-law, Donna Vaughan; and his beloved Allie.
He is survived by his eight children: Jane Headley (Tim), Tom Vaughan (Karen), Curt Vaughan (Janet), Bill Vaughan, Tim Vaughan, Nancy Morrison (Greg), Kevin Vaughan (Barbara), and Kerry Kesecker (John); his 18 grandchildren, Kristopher and Patrick Headley (Lisa), Leanne Rains (Chris), Nicholas and Zachary Vaughan, Hailey, Joaquin, Victoria and Lillian Vaughan, Missy Hall, Hannah, Katelin and Holly Morrison, Brandon and Grant Vaughan, Charlie, Jackson and Chase Kesecker; and his six great-grandchildren, Ashton and Kyras Headley, Peyton and Cecelia Headley, and Emma and Claire Rains.
There will be visitation at the Soledad Mission between 3:00-6:30 p.m. on Monday, September 23, 2013 followed by a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Solitude Catholic Church in Soledad, with a reception immediately following at the Parish Hall.
Memorial donations may be made to Mission Union School, the Soledad Mission, or Eden Valley Care Center. Arrangements are by Woodyard Funeral Home, 395 East St., Soledad, CA 93960.
