Teruo “Tippy” Hori

1928 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Teruo “Tippy” Hori Obituary
MONTEREY – Teruo "Tippy" Hori, 84, passed away on November 8, 2013. Born on Terminal Island in San Pedro Bay, California, to Yataro and Tome Hori, Tippy was the second of four children.
Tippy was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Ruby, who passed away in 2005. He is survived by daughters, Lisa Hori and husband Dirk Yuricich of Stateline, Nevada, Suzanne Schenck and husband Scott of DuPont, Washington; grandchildren, Max and Megan Schenck, and sisters, Haruka Honda of Seaside, California, and Sakiko Doi of Visalia, California.
Tippy left Terminal Island at an early age when the family moved to San Francisco, California. They lived there until the onset of WWII when they were incarcerated at the Heart Mountain Internment Camp in Wyoming. Upon release from Heart Mountain, Tippy's family lived shortly in Denver, Colorado before moving to Monterey, California in 1946.
Tippy served in the Army at the Presidio of Monterey, after which he went into commercial fishing, pursuing schools of fish down the west coast of Mexico and Central America. In 1956 he went into business with his brother- in- law Stanley Honda, operating a Mobil Service Station in three successive locations in Monterey until his retirement in 1992.
In his younger days, Tippy enjoyed bowling and playing Mahjong. He was also an avid golfer, playing three rounds of golf every week with his golf buddies for the past 20 years, right up to months before his death. He shared his love of golf with his son- in- law and grandson.
He was always supportive and there when we needed him; he was the anchor in our lives. Tippy will be greatly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held on November 23, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the Monterey Peninsula Buddhist Temple, 1155 Noche Buena St., Seaside, CA.
