Willie Shields Obituary
PRUNEDALE, CA – Willie Shields, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Willie was born February 12, 1924 to Winze Shields and Lillie Williams Shields in Winston County, MS and spent his childhood years growing up as the oldest son with 11 other siblings. In 1943 Willie joined the Army and fought in Europe during WWII, then later in the Korean War.
On October 14, 1950 Willie married Willie Mae and by late 1951 had their first child, Geneva. In 1956, Willie was stationed at Fort Ord, California, already with his second child, Franklin. In 1959, Willie was sent to Germany and spent nearly four years there. His last two children, Kenlin and Willie Ervin were born in Frankfurt, Germany. Upon ending this tour of duty in 1963 and 20 years of military service, Willie returned back to Seaside, CA and retired from the military.
Willie then became the very first person hired at NAFA, a Ford Motors carpet manufacture subsidiary located on Cannery Row. By the mid 70s, Willie's passion for real-estate led him to purchase nearly 20 single family homes on the Monterey Peninsula and permanent retirement. Not sitting idle, he took this time to earn an AA Degree from Monterey Peninsula College and graduated in 1976. In 1986, Willie and his wife moved to Prunedale for the quiet country life.
Willie will always be known for caring and giving to others. He was full of joy and loved the outdoor sports of hunting and fishing and can be remembered for sharing this liking with his sons and many of their friends on weekends.
Willie is survived by his daughter, Geneva and her husband, Gilbert Fletcher; son, Franklin and his wife, Cynthia and their child, Brett; son, Kenlin and his wife, Nanette and their children, Aerymus and Jazzlyn; and Kenlin's oldest daughter, Celestria; two sisters, Josephine Hopes and Missouri Shields. Preceeding Willie in death was his wife, Willie Mae; his youngest son, Willie and his grandson, Ronnie Calhoun.
Interment with presentation of Military Honors was held at San Joaquin National Cemetery. Visit: www.baysidecommunitymortuary.com to sign the online guestbook.
