Jerrold Lomax, Obituary

SAND?CITY, CA – Jerrold Ellsworth Lomax, FAIA, a California modernist architect, passed away quietly at his home on May 17, 2014 at age 87, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Jerry was born in Los Angeles on April 10, 1927 to Andrew J. Lomax and Esther L. Williams, where the family resided until relocating to Houston, Texas in 1938. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, Jerry enlisted in 1945 and was part of the Naval occupying force in Japan. He was taken by the simplicity of design, functionality and honest use of materials that inspired him to study architecture. He graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Houston in 1951.
He longed to return to Los Angeles, after working in Houston for three years. This need was further driven by his admiration for the early work he had seen in school by Craig Ellwood Associates. He relocated to California hoping to work with him, and landed a job. It would soon evolve into the key role of being 'associate in charge of design' for the projects produced in the office during the firm's formative years of 1953 to 1962.
Lomax then formed Lomax Associates, where his work continued with minimalist modern ease into the function of commercial, industrial, custom residential and mixed-use projects. During the course of his long career, his professional affiliations and publications were numerous. He received many local, state and national design awards and honors from both the AIA and other organizations. In 1980 he was elected to the AIA College of Fellows.
In 1976 he married Sandra E. Miles and they merged their families; Jerry's two daughters, Heather A., and Stace H. Lomax (Bronfman), and Sandy's daughter and son, Cathleen E. and Patrick J. Rigney. In 1995, with children grown, they relocated to the Monterey Peninsula. Their Carmel Valley residence/office garnered Jerry a local AIA Monterey Bay Honor Award. Others followed, including the 2012 Robert Stanton Award.
He is survived by Sandra and their respective children, including three grandchildren: Kurt De Gregorio, (Bronfman) and twins, Jack and Lily Rigney (Patrick and Leslie). His latest residential project in Carmel is currently under construction and expected to be completed in 2015.
A celebration of life will be forthcoming.
Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and Central Coast VNA.

Sandy:
Whenever I drive past the office building at Westwood and Tennessee, I have fond memories of working as a receptionist for Lomax Mills in the early 1970s. Jerry was very creative in his work, blessed with a great sense of humor, and above all, kind, caring, thoughtful and generous with everyone. I met you around the time I left the firm for law school, and was happy to hear later that you two had married. As a real estate attorney who often works with architects and designers, my experience working for Jerry and his firm continues to be valuable so many years later.
I was saddened to learn of Jerry's passing in the LA Times. Our thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time.

Sandy, I am so sorry for your loss. The eight years working with Jerry in Venice were magical. We all developed a taste for wine, arugula, and wheels of parmesan cheese. Jerry's passion and commitment lives on in each of our lives. Love to you. M

I am extremely sad that we did not get a chance to share one last bowl of his favorite chocolate mousse at Le Bicylette or get a tour of his house currently under construction when we were in town last month. Our heart goes out to you Sandy. What a wonderful man.
