DeVenney, Mr. John James (Jack), 88, passed away at his home in Wetumpka on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from First Methodist Church of Wetumpka, with Rev. Kevin Kelly officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors in Pine View Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Ellison Funeral Home, Friday, May 24, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, May 25, 2013 from 10-11 a.m. at the church. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Dunford Ross DeVenney, Wetumpka, AL; daughter, Kelly Wood, Chattanooga, TN; sons, Kai DeVenney (Peggy Sue), Knoxville, TN, Msgt. Krist DeVenney (Amber), Duke AFB, Navarre, FL; sister, Collen Radish; sisters-in-law, Mary Louise DeVenney, both of Sharon, PA, Glenda Fowler (Joe), Kathy Davis, both of Wetumpka, AL; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jack was raised in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and was the first drum major and drummer at Hickory High School, Hermitage, PA. Jack was also a drum major for the U.S. Navy
's Drum and Bulge Corps while he served for almost three years during World War II
, seeing battle in the South Pacific and Guam. He was then transferred to Washington, DC where he served in Communications in the White House and Pentagon. During this time, he also traveled throughout the United States teaching twirling and auxiliaries. In the mid sixties he met and married Shirley Dunford Ross and moved to Wetumpka, AL. He organized many civic events for the City of Wetumpka, including Christmas on the Coosa, New Year's Ball Drop/Media Display, Fourth of July Celebration, Crate Race, Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Observance. He and Shirley conducted Half-Time Camps at twenty-three major universities and several European countries, which included National competition at Notre Dame University with over 5,000 participants. He was National Rules Commissioner for the National Baton Twirling Association. Jack and Shirley have owned and operated A Touch of Class, which is ladies clothing, formal and bridal store in Wetumpka, AL.
