Margaret Beverly

BEVERLY, Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Brooks, passed away on September 11, 2013 in Columbia, Maryland. Homegoing services will be Tuesday, September 17 in Maryland. A memorial service in Montgomery is planned for a later date. A native of Alabama, Mrs. Beverly was born January 28, 1913 in Selma. She married Creigs Carter Beverly in 1931 and from that union six children were born. She was predeceased by her mother, Edna Brooks; husband; a daughter, Barbara Jean Beverly and a grandson, Howard Spencer Hancock, Jr. She was baptized at First Baptist Church in Selma, Alabama and attended Knox Academy and Selma University. She was an honor graduate of Alabama State University. She lived most of her adult life in Atlanta, Georgia and Montgomery. She was a devoted member of Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church where she was a member of the January Club, Deaconess Board, Missionary Society and the Benevolence committee. Mrs. Beverly led an exemplary life of commitment to her family, students, and her civic and religious communities. She spent more than 40 years in the field of education teaching at Carver High School, Booker T. Washington High School and H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College in Montgomery. She was instrumental in placing many of her students in jobs to demonstrate skills acquired under her tutelage. She was a remarkable woman with a generous and caring spirit that was evident in her many humanitarian efforts providing meals for neighbors and friends in the Montgomery community. She was a charter member of Les Comarades Club a member of Margaret Murray Bridge Club a life member of the Montgomery Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.She is survived by loving and devoted family members: Daughters Margaret (Howard) Hancock, Sylvia (Hilton) Stanford, Angela (John) Ruffin; sons, Creigs (Olivia) Beverly and Ronald Beverly; ten grandchildren: Michael Hancock, Ronald Stanford, Donna Stanford Wells, Eric Stanford, Cheryl (Ricky) Rogers, Creigs Beverly III, John Wesley (Jennifer) Ruffin, Meeka (Dana) Harris, Beverly A. Ruffin and Rhonda Curney; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-greatgrandchildren; a sister-in-law, Gladys Wallace; neighbors and extended family, Bennye and Joe Reasor and a host of other special friends. She lived a life of grace and brought joy to all who were fortunate to know her. Contributions may be made in her memory to Margaret and Creigs Beverly Scholarship Fund, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, 454 Dexter Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36104.
