1953 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Spurlock, Jr., Charles Hughes, 60, passed away peacefully at home on November 12, 2013. Chuck was born on April 17, 1953 in Nashville, TN. He was a graduate of McCallie High School in Chattanooga, TN. He received his BA in History and Religion from Duke University and a Master's Degree in European History from Vanderbilt University. After teaching high school and college in Georgia, Chuck's political career began when he joined the re-election campaign of Governor Guy Hunt in Alabama as Organization Director. Following a successful campaign, he served the Governor as Appointments Secretary. Next, he was called to Tennessee to assemble Fred Thompson's successful campaign for US Senate. Later that year, he returned to Alabama as Finance Director for Robin Swift's gubernatorial bid. After the primary, he led Jeff Sessions' campaign in his race for Attorney General, and then eventually the United States Senate. Chuck has been Senator Sessions' State Director for 17 years. Chuck was an avid student of history, and through his profession, became a passionate teacher of history and politics leading him to be a favorite guest lecturer for many organizations throughout the state. His involvement in Alabama politics was deep and will be remembered by all who knew him. Chuck was preceded in death by his father, Charles Hughes Spurlock, Sr. Chuck is survived by his wife of 16 years, Phyllis Fulford Spurlock; his daughter Jan Davis; grandchildren, Phillip Davis and Shelby Davis of Montgomery, AL; his mother, Virginia Spurlock of Nashville, TN; his brother John Spurlock (Julie) of Thousand Oaks, CA; sister Dianne Winstead (John) of Goodlettsville, TN; brother Jeff Spurlock (Amy) of Troy, AL; sister Stacy Robbins (Kevin) of Frankfort, KY and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 15th at the First United Methodist Church at 2416 W Cloverdale Park, Montgomery, AL at 10:00 a.m. A service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the main sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Box 3624 DUMC, Durham, NC 27710, Attn: Ellen Stainback or First United Methodist Church, 2416 West Cloverdale Park, Montgomery, AL 36106.
