Obituary Condolences

BARNETTE, Charles Robert, 68, died Saturday, February 22, at Crestwood Medical Center from a final episode of aspiration after decades defying medical odds as the "Comeback Kid." Charles pre-arranged for his body to be used for medical research at his alma mater, Union University, in Jackson, TN. A memorial service will be held at Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, AL, on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. He is survived by his children, son Charles Jonathan Barnette and wife LuAnne Killian Barnette of Huntsville, AL, daughter Jennifer Jenkins Barnette of New York City, and daughter Amy Carolyn Barnette Cunningham (husband Zac) of Louisville, KY; two grandchildren, Henry and Clara Barnette; and brothers Jerry Barnette of Franklin, TN, and Larry Barnette (wife Sandra) of Branson, MO. Spanning the family's time in Memphis and then 30 years in Montgomery, his career included public relations leadership at Holiday Inn and Blount International, and through his private practice. His dedication to community service was far-reaching in business and the arts, having served or chaired the Public Relations Council of Alabama, the Montgomery Area Chamber, the Montgomery Community Foundation, and many arts and neighborhood organizations, with a special passion for the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra. After the passing of his wife, Carolyn Young Jenkins Barnette, in 2008, he moved to Huntsville and found joy serving the Huntsville Youth Orchestra through his final days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a , inspired by Charles.
