Lt. Col. Helen Agnes Wilson, U.S. Air Force, Ret., a resident of Wetumpka, Alabama passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the age of 73. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Larry Wilson; mother, Helen Poland; step-son, James Wilson; step-daughter, Diane Cobis; two grandchildren; brothers, Robert Garnett, Ted Garnett, Bud Garnett, Gordon Garnett, and Randy Poland; and sister, Marlene Leota. Helen received her nurses training in Massachusetts and after working and teaching in Boston she joined the Air Force where she had a distinguished career, retiring after 20 years as a Lt. Col. In 1989 she relocated to Alabama with her husband where she received a master's degree at Troy University, taught, and was deeply involved in community service. She was an active member of the Alabama State Nurses Association, serving for a time as its Interim Director, Volunteered at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, and was a member of the Soroptimist International serving twice as the president of the Montgomery Chapter, and two years as the Director of the Southern Region. She will be sorely missed not only by her family but by the many people whose lives she touched. At her request there will be no viewing or service.
