HOWELL HEFLIN Obituary

HEFLIN, Howell Thomas, age 83, of Tuscumbia, Alabama, died March 29, 2005. He was born June 19, 1921 to the late Rev. Marvin Rutledge Heflin and the late Louise Strudwick Heflin in Poulan, Georgia.He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Heflin; his son, Howell Thomas Heflin, Jr.; his daughter-in-law, Corn-elia Hood Heflin; his grandson, Wil-son Carmichael Heflin; and his granddaughter, Mary Catherine Heflin. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Carmichael Heflin; his brother, Wilson Lumpkin Heflin, Ph.D.; and his sister, Julia Clarke Heflin.Senator Heflin was a member of First United Methodist Church in Tus-cumbia, Alabama. He was a U.S. Marine having served in the South Pacific during World War II. From 1948 until 1971, he was an Attorney-at-Law in Tuscumbia, Alabama. He was then elected Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and was privileged to serve three terms in the United States Senate. He re-tired from public service in 1997 and returned home to Tuscumbia, Alabama.Senator Heflin graduated from Col-bert County High School in Leigh-ton, Alabama in 1938 and gradu-ated from Birmingham Southern College in 1942. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served in the South Pacific where he was twice wounded and where he received the Silver Star. After World War II he attended the Uni-versity of Alabama School of Law and was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 1948.In accordance with his wishes, a private burial will be held. There will be a public memorial service on Sunday, April 3, 2005, at 2:00 pm at the Deshler High School Auditorium, 200 N. Commons, Tuscumbia, Ala-bama. Visitation will follow at the Winston Home, Tuscumbia, Ala-bama. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made either to the First United Methodist Church, 104 E. Third Street, Tuscum-bia, Alabama, 35674; Grace Epis-copal Church, 103 Darby Avenue, Sheffield, Alabama 35660; or Col-bert Caring Center, 102 N. Water Street, Tuscumbia, Alabama.Morrison Funeral Home of Tuscumbia Directing
