Obituary Condolences

Dr. Orizaba Emfinger, 94, of Union Springs, died early Friday, June 14, 2013. A graveside service will be Saturday, June 15, 2013, 4:00 p.m., Perpetual Care Cemetery, Union Springs, Alabama, with Rev. Bill Cannon presiding and Gray Funeral Home directing.

Dr. Emfinger graduated from Birmingham Southern College and Northwestern University School of Medicine. After serving as a Captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army during World War II, he completed a residency in surgery at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Birmingham, AL. Dr. Emfinger was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

In 1951, he and his family moved to Union Springs, Alabama, where he practiced medicine until his retirement. Dr. Emfinger faithfully served the First Baptist Church of Union Springs as a member and Deacon. For many years he served his community as a member of the Union Springs City Council.

Orizaba Emfinger was a gifted physician, and he was honored to be a part of the medical profession. He gave back to his profession by serving as a member, Life Councillor, and President of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.

In 1985, the Samuel Buford Word Award was presented by the Medical Association of the State of Alabama to Orizaba Emfinger, M.D. "For Outstanding Service To Humanity Beyond Professional Duty". And so his life was lived.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Emfinger and son, Michael Orizaba Emfinger. He is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Jim) Fay and daughter, Trish Shaner; daughter-in-law, Brenda Emfinger; son, John (Louise) Emfinger; granddaughter, Brooke (Phelps) Reid; grandsons, Jim Fay, Houston Shaner and Zaba Emfinger; great-granddaughter, Alice Holbrook Reid.

Deacons of First Baptist Church will be pallbearers.

Prior to the burial the family will receive visitors at Gray Funeral Home from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m.
