Jerry A. Powell, Jr., 86, of Wetumpka, Alabama died April 30, 2012. He served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, with the 10th Navel Beach Battalion, participating in seven major invasions in the South Pacific. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and served in the Alabama State Senate from 1975 to 1978. Subsequently, he was the lobbyist for the Alabama Nursing Home Association. For many years, he operated several clothing stores and was a commercial builder and real estate developer. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lovie and Andrew and his sister, Marjorie Ellis. He is survived by his wife, Julie Powell; his daughter, Cynthia Hall; son, Jay Powell and his wife Jane; grandchildren: Cynthia's sons, Matthew (Tina) Hall and John (Tiffany) Hall; Jay's son, Gregory Powell; and daughter, Katelyn Powell. He has six great-grandchildren: Kayla, Andrew, Ethan, Julian, Gabriel, and Harlow. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Gassett Funeral Home. A graveside service for family only will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012 at Pine View Memorial Gardens with Rev. Kevin Kelly and Pastor John Varner officiating.
