DON GILBERT Obituary

GILBERT, Don J., a longtime resident of Montgomery and the Alexander City area, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2012, in Alexander City. He was 61. Don passed away quietly at his home in the company of his family and friends after an extended illness.

Don Gilbert received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama, his MBA from Auburn University Montgomery and his Juris Doctor from Jones Law School. During his career, he served as the Executive Director of the Alabama Independent Bankers Association and then as the Executive Director of the Alabama Trial Lawyers Association (Alabama Association for Justice). After leaving the Trial Lawyers Association, Gilbert worked as an independent lobbyist in Montgomery. He retired from the profession in 2010.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Gilbert is survived by his wife, Wanda Worthington Gilbert; his mother, Betty Cleveland Gilbert; his three children: Ashley M. Gilbert (Sara Hoover, partner), Joseph Gregory Gilbert, Stacy Lott Reed; his sister, Sharon Gilbert Yates; his brother, Doug R. Gilbert; his niece, Mallory Ann Yates; and his nephews, Nathan Pierce Yates (Ashley, wife) and John Parker Yates. He is preceded in death by his father Donald Ray Gilbert who passed away earlier this year.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Don Gilbert will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Church in the Pines at 1 Our Children's Highway, Alexander City. The family will receive guests at their home after the service at 1754 Johnson Creek Road (Coosa County Rd. 92,) Alexander City.

Arrangements are being handled by the Radney Funeral Home of Alexander City, 256-234-2511.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Northwestern University's PPA research in memory of Don Gilbert. Checks may be sent to Northwestern at Northwestern University CNADC, Searle Building, 11th Floor, 320 E. Superior, Chicago, IL 60611, Attention: Kevin Connolly.

I only recently heard of Don's passing. I am so saddened about his loss. I admired Don so very much, especially the way he handled adversity. In this regard he was an great example and encourager to me when I had health problems. He meant so much to so many people. The family is in my prayers.

What can be said about Don? He was so many things to so many people. He was my friend! Although we visited little in recent years, he was always a big part of my life.
