Alan C. Burns, Sr., passed away peacefully at home on September 2, 2013.

He was a devoted father and husband, a man of honesty, strength, love, good will, and humor. Alan grew up in Cullman where he met his wife of 64 years, Ella Marie Hagan. They returned to Cullman upon retirement.

He spent his life as an educator, touching and improving the lives of thousands of young people, first as a high school teacher and coach, then principal, county school superintendent, and business manager for the Alabama Education Association. Alan was a graduate of Cullman High School and the University of Alabama, where he earned postgraduate degrees in Education. In April of 2013 he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of Cullman High School. After high school and before college, he served in both the Merchant Marines in the Pacific and the U.S. Army in Europe.

Alan was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Burns, his mother, Eda Mae DeBorde, sister, Delores Blalock, and grandparents, John and Lexer Burns. He is survived by his wife, Ella Marie; daughter, Marie Lutz and her husband Rick; son, Alan Burns Jr. and his wife Donna, and his sister, Frances Beaver.

An avid golfer and fisherman, he played football at Cullman High, St. Bernard College, and while in the Army, where his team won the Army's European Championship. He loved Alabama football.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 6, at Cullman First United Methodist Church, 320 Third St. SE, where he and his wife were married. Visitation will be from 1 to 2pm with the funeral at 2pm followed by a brief graveside service. Flowers may be sent to the church or, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church music department.
