Novella Smith Obituary
Novella H. Smith, age 83, of Montgomery, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2013. Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Bethany SDA Church with Phillips-Riley Funeral Home directing. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with Phillips-Riley Funeral Home directing.

Novella Smith was born August 6, 1930 in Hope Hull, Alabama to the late Robert and Selena Harris. She was a veteran of the Montgomery bus boycott. Having moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1956, she lived there for 40 years with her husband Alex Smith, Sr. and family. Novella was a dietary aide at Coney Island Hospital for 38 years. She was an active member of the Bethel SDA Church of Brooklyn, NY, where she served as Head Usher for many years until she was elected as President of the Northeastern Conference Ushers Federation of Seventh-day Adventists. Novella returned to Montgomery in 1997 to live out her senior years with her husband.

Her husband of over 57 years, Alex Smith, Sr. preceded her in death. She is survived by her four children, Linda Marie Smith, Ryntha Henderson-Amare, Alex Smith, Jr., and Vernell Maurice Smith; two grandchildren, Rynick Dione Henderson, Akantunde Achebe-Ute Aunga Henderson-Amare; one great-grandson, Jair Satenjani Forbes-Henderson; a son-in-law, Sanyakhu-Sheps Amare; four sisters, Ardie Willis, Missouri Milton, Carrie Dale Parker, Olean Nelson; two brothers, Verlin Harris, Joe Harris and Pearl Harris (wife of Joe Harris) and a host of other relatives and friends.

She considered her greatest achievement in life to be her children.
